I present to you my new/revised fursona, Res, the Green Lynx.

Res is a kind and friendly Lynx. Enigmatic, he’s always been somewhat of a loner, but he really does enjoy good companionship. He likes music, good food and adventures. He’s fond of the woods he lives in. In a nod to his ancient Zafara ancestry, he’s not prone to violence, but would put up a good fight if provoked.

This was a real challenge, as I was so used to drawing one basic character style that I had been doing since I started. Some of my early faces were hardly feline at all, and I had to keep breaking old style habits. I looked at a lot of references, and went back and forth between different hands/paws, feet/paws, and contemplated how would I do the legs.. The legs themselves were a challenge since I had never tried digigrade-style legs before. I considered different colors or markings. In the end, this is what I really felt like I would like to be, what my fursona that represents me should be.

I like long tails, so while he’s a Lynx, he’s a rare long-tailed Lynx. (Well, rare GREEN long-tailed Lynx..) I’ve always felt comfortable with the green/gold/brown color combination, and green is my favorite color.

I owe a debt of gratitude to my friend =NINKOjIN for all the support, help and inspiration during this project. See the great cellshading on the left character? I wanted to do one ref soft shaded, and one cellshaded, but my attempts with the latter kept ending in failure. I asked Val for a little example on the drawing how she would shade it, and she spent a whole night on it…She said to feel free to use any parts of it I could, but I couldn’t improve on any of it, so that’s all her cellshading. The clothes are especially nice – I’ve always had a problem making them look more than something that was just painted on. It’s amazing how just a few highlighted wrinkles can give clothes such depth. The cellshading help was a good experience, being able to compare how I pictured the shading in my attempts, and how she finally did it on a character I drew. I learned a lot, and will come back to study it more next time I cellshade myself.

This is awesome, Res! Wow, you've improved a heck of a lot since I last looked at your art. O_O What a great fursona, too.

The best part is that there's no sign of Zafara anywhere on him. Unless you count the mark? I think you will feel a lot more of a connection with this guy than you ever could with a copyrighted species fan character. Though fan art and fan characters really help one to learn a lot in art and design, I think when someone first makes thier own "original" character that belongs to them completely, it's a huge step.

One of the biggest changes that I like in your design are the feet/toes. They no longer look like green human feet (which used to kind of creep me out to be honest) and look a lot more like an animal's. Another reason that jumps out at me is because you made that change all on your own and I wasn't expecting it.

My suggestion for starting your feral form is to take your new head design and try to draw it in yet another angle/expression to help practice drawing the same character as close as you can to the original image, and then of course just fitting a feral body pose in however it would work best with the new head position.

Oh, the final detail on the insulator really makes it look like glass.

My other signature is epic.

You're right.. trying to get away from a copyrighted fan character is why I changed him the first time, but those changes were fairly superficial, and he still felt Zafara-ish. But now I really do feel he belongs to me.. or I belong to him. He doesn't mind the final little nod to his ancestry... it's on his back so he can't see it anyway.

I'll try that for the feral design. I really have no idea how I'll approach that just yet - you think with 4 cats in the house, drawing a feline would be easy.

And I do feel a connection with him already - more so than I thought I would so soon after changing. When I sat back and looked at this final drawing, it was surprisingly easy to let go of what he was before.

I think it's his smile ;)

Haha thanks Czy.. yeah, as fond as I was of my old design, like I said above, it's amazing how quick I took to this one.

I like this change. =D I'm a huge fan of felines as well, so I automatially like any kind of cat. However, he looks awesome as a Lynx! =D I love his cheek fluff 83

Hey thanks! I can't wait to get his feral form down, which will be a challenge since I've hardly ever drawn any felines.

I think it was actually the cheek fluff on the sketch my friend did that finally made the design start to click.
